Day 19
Permanent access to clean water for children in Santa Rosa

Peru is known for its sand dunes, among other things. "Sandboarding", related to snowboarding, is a popular pastime for tourists here. But desert has not always been a defining feature of Peru's landscape. A spectacular discovery proves that things looked different here a long time ago: the 36 million year old skull of a gigantic prehistoric whale was discovered (Der Spiegel, 2022). Today, nature has to be inventive to deal with the lack of water - like the fog-drinking beetle, which is only 2 cm long. It stands with its head bowed in the clouds of fog that drift over the desert from the sea. The moisture condenses on its back and runs in 5 mm drops down narrow grooves to its mouthparts. This allows it to absorb a quantity of water equivalent to 40% of its weight (enorm, 2022). In Peru, especially in the dry region around Lima, collecting and storing water would be important for the population. (Oxfam Peru, 2022).

background

The CloudFisher fog collectors imitate the fog-drinking beetle and convert the moisture from the air into clean water in dry areas with a lot of fog. This is also possible in the coastal town of Santa Rosa. There is enough fog in this poor settlement near Lima. Santa Rosa is currently not connected to the drinking water supply, and the municipality does not plan to connect water in the future. The Peruvian capital Lima itself is one of the driest cities in the world. Nevertheless, over 8 million people live here and in the surrounding districts - in a desert where only 9mm of rain falls per year (Oxfam Peru, 2022). Due to the uneven distribution of water, Peru is considered one of the most water-insecure countries in the world (UNESCO; Americas Quarterly, 2022). As a rule, only wealthy urban districts are connected to a water supply system. In Santa Rosa, people have to buy expensive and often polluted water from tanker trucks. They pay around 20% of their monthly income for this – significantly more than the rich pay for their tap water (Circle of Blue; INEI, Instituto Nacional de Estadistica e Informatica, 2017). The tankers are not subject to any government supervision that checks the cleanliness and quality of the vehicles. The poor water quality and the often inadequate hygiene standards lead to diarrhea and parasite infestations among the poorer population. In addition, school children do not have enough to eat because, among other things, there is no water for cooking, which has a negative impact on their physical and mental development. The water from the fog collectors will improve the situation for the children in Santa Rosa in the long term. The fog water runs through collecting channels into water pipes that lead to the water extraction stations at two schools. It can be reliably extracted from there. Excess water is stored in a cistern for the months when there is less fog.

 Profam, Santa Rosa
Day 19 Day 19
The good deed

Thanks to the CloudFisher mist collectors installed, the children at two schools in Santa Rosa, Profam - north of Lima - have reliable access to clean water. They also learn how to use this precious resource wisely and sustainably and are taught hygiene practices. Proper hand washing helps prevent the transmission of diseases. If there is any water left over from the CloudFisher nets, it is used to water the plants in the school gardens. This means that enough fresh and nutrient-rich vegetables can be prepared in the school kitchens. In training sessions, the children learn how important a varied diet is for their health. Overall, thanks to your good deed, the children eat healthier, have clean drinking water, thus get sick less and can learn better.

In Peru (which is twice the size of France), the desert is right next to the water. The Atacama Desert on the Pacific is over 2,000 km long and 40 to 150 km wide.
