Day 10
Support for young people who feel stressed

Supporting children and young people in difficult situations was important to Lou when she began to provide advice via chat. "It's a total sign of trust when a stranger tells me about their worries. And when we end up finding a solution together, it's a great feeling!" Just like in the chat with Mara: school stress and the feeling that everything is just too much right now, that's what Mara turned to Lou with. With her friendly manner, Lou was able to create a space in which Mara confided in her and in which she felt taken seriously. Lou was able to show Mara her own expectations of herself and together they found out what was good for Mara in this situation. For example, treating herself lovingly, rewarding herself but also confiding in her parents. Chat consultations don't always end with a good solution, but the feeling remains that the children and young people have taken an important first step by seeking a conversation. Lou was able to end the chat with Mara with a good feeling.

background

More and more children are chatting when they need help. In chat consultations, sensitive topics are addressed in particular, even more so than in face-to-face consultations or on the phone (Hanley et al., 2017). In the anonymous chat consultation from Nummer gegen Kummer, people seeking advice often dare to talk about difficult and embarrassing topics and fears for the first time. Here they learn that they are taken seriously and that it can be helpful to seek help. The consultation also encourages them to seek further help if necessary or to confide in people from their close circle. The chat is uncomplicated, easy to access and helps to reduce psychological problems and fears in children and young people and to resolve loneliness. The corona pandemic in particular has affected the well-being of many children and young people. Currently, eight out of ten children and young people feel stressed by the corona pandemic (Ravens-Sieberer et al., 2022) and experts assume that the psychological stress of the pandemic will have a lasting effect on children and young people. But even outside of major crises, young adolescents have a lot to talk about: bullying, conflicts with parents, heartbreak, fears. Growing up is a challenging time for children and adolescents, during which mental illnesses often develop and manifest (Solmi et al., 2021). It is important to strengthen the mental health and resources of children and adolescents in the long term and to show mentally stressed children and adolescents options for action and offer support (Bujard et al., 2021) so that they can face challenging changes in their everyday lives. Chat counseling can provide such support.

Day 10 Day 10
The good deed

With your donation today, you will enable three chat messages to be sent to a child in Germany seeking help. The live chat for children and young people is available every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. Here, they can chat one-on-one with a trained advisor, manage their messages without providing any personal data, or start a new chat. The young people can use the chat counseling as often as they like. It is often enough to get rid of something that is bothering them or to get new food for thought. The advisors are trained to recognize and strengthen the individual resources of children and young people. In this way, they help them to establish their own coping strategies that they can fall back on in later life situations. NgK thus makes a contribution to averting dangers to the physical, mental, intellectual and social development of children and young people in Germany. In the long term, this relieves the burden on families, educational and psychosocial care facilities.
