Day 11
Support for refugees and their training companies

Amal (19) has come one step closer to her dream of working in a dentist's office. During her training, she will face many challenges and will have to muster a lot of strength. And yet, this time will lay the foundation for a self-determined life. Amal is driven by two main wishes: her own apartment and financial independence. So far, she has lacked the support of home, where the work for the family often falls to her. However, Amal is determined to stand up for herself and her goals. To do this, she needs above all appreciation, support and the courage not to give up - even when there are problems. For her, the path through the training means not only professional qualifications, but also the opportunity to develop personally. Her self-confidence is strengthened, she experiences self-efficacy, overcomes insecurities and grows beyond herself.

background

Wars and crises in countries such as Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan have led to more and more people coming to Germany over the past ten years to seek protection and build a new future for themselves. The majority of the 1.7 million refugees are of working age, and 60 percent of them are even under 30 years old (BIBB, 2019). Finding young refugees training and jobs is therefore a key task of German integration work.
One in ten companies now employs refugees as trainees. However, for many of these companies, this also brings new challenges. For example, more than 90 percent of companies cite a lack of German language skills as an obstacle to the training process. Companies also find it difficult that many refugees first have to get used to the new working environment. The majority of companies also find the additional support effort to be too high (Pierenkemper & Heuer, 2020). In order not to leave companies alone with the integration of refugees into the labor market, there are numerous public support measures. However, these are not always specifically tailored to the needs of refugees, and 60 percent of companies state that the offers do not match their requirements (Pierenkemper & Heuer, 2020).

The good deed

Thanks to your good deed, young refugees will receive 8 minutes of help with their training. Successful training is the key to successful integration. The core component of training support is the German course to promote professional language, as a lack of German language skills is seen as the greatest challenge in the training process. The German course is supplemented by various workshops and tutoring offers that are geared to what refugees and companies need. At the same time, the refugees' key skills are to be strengthened. These offers are accompanied by an open consultation hour for companies and refugees, where we advise and support them with questions and problems. Successfully completing training opens the doors to a self-determined life. Your good deed today will therefore promote the social and professional participation of young refugees in Germany and reduce reservations among companies about hiring refugees.
