Day 16
and a few vegetable plants can make a big difference

In Esperanza, a village in Guatemala, the indigenous population was systematically attacked during the civil war (1960-1996): their main settlement area, the highlands, was bombed across the board. Even today, large parts of this region are cut off from education, medical care and the economy. The people suffer from illness, hunger and great poverty and have little hope. But the village of Esperanza (in English "hope") is a good starting point for making a change.

background

Hundreds of villages in the highlands of Guatemala live in poverty. The village of Esperanza is characterized by the many orphans who have lost their fathers or both parents in accidents on the way to work. The vehicles and the narrow roads are in a miserable condition; journeys often end in death. The children and the women left behind are ultimately left to fend for themselves.
Many people are indigenous peoples, speak the Mam dialect (one of the three most common dialects in the country) and do not speak the official language, Spanish. They live in extreme poverty. Their children have no prospects. There are also hardly any jobs in Nueva Panajachel and the surrounding area. In addition, most residents have little or no schooling. Women are the only ones responsible for the household. In order to cook and heat (it is often very cold in this region), they have to travel long distances to collect firewood. The diet is inadequate, partly because of the great poverty, and partly because of a lack of knowledge about food preparation. Maize is the most important and sometimes the only food here. The nutritional situation for the children is correspondingly catastrophic. They suffer from malnutrition or severe nutritional deficiencies.

Day 16 Day 16
The good deed

The "Vegetable Plants Eliminate Hardship" measure addresses the causes of poverty. The women learn to feed their families with their own strength and to prepare varied and healthy meals from their harvest. At the same time, knowledge is imparted that enables the women to sell their products regionally. The organization therefore simultaneously and, above all, permanently addresses the two biggest deficits: it combats diseases caused by malnutrition and eliminates material hardship.
