Day 15
How blind women save lives with their particularly good sense of touch

Breast cancer is still the most common cancer among women in Germany. Early detection and treatment of breast cancer means less stress for those affected and significantly improves the patients' chances of survival. Blind and visually impaired people often have a proven superior sense of touch. discovering hands makes use of this talent.

background

In Germany, over 60,000 women develop breast cancer every year. Every year, 18,000 women die from this disease. This makes breast cancer the most common cause of death in women between 40 and 44 and the deadliest type of cancer in women between 25 and 74. For women under 50, the standard examination procedure is a manual examination. Mammography screening is only offered to women over 50. This makes the manual examination all the more important. On the one hand, standardized examinations in routine consultations are often not sufficient and tumors are often not detected. On the other hand, there are around 1.2 million people in Germany with less than 30% vision, not all of whom are employed when they are of working age. A lack of equipment and adaptation of the working environment as well as prejudices against the performance of visually impaired people explain their low integration rate into the job market. Women are particularly affected by this.

Day 15 Day 15
The good deed

Blind or visually impaired women who have qualified as MTUs (medical tactile examiners) have successfully turned their "disability" into a talent. They perform responsible work that provides a meaningful and positively perceived service in the health system. 27 doctors in clinics and practices that employ MTUs at 16 locations are now participating in the model.
