10 minutes of memory training for shoe shiners in Bolivia
Day 17
Brain jogging and exercise for a better quality of life in old age

Shoe shiners are alcoholics, drug addicts and criminals - that is a common prejudice in La Paz. People like you and me, fathers, mothers, grandparents, young people who do simple but honest and dignified work and who depend on daily income. That is what others say. People like everyone else? No, the shoe-shining seniors are much more than that! Some of them are very knowledgeable in natural medicine, others cook the best Bolivian dishes. Rigoberto (85) was a resistance fighter during the dictatorship in Bolivia in the 1970s and was to be nominated as vice president for the indigenous party, Juan (72) learned to read and write at the age of over 65 so that he could help his granddaughters with their homework, Policarpio (81) completed a university degree in tourism at the age of 75, Valentín (77) played a shoeshine boy in the film “The Hunt” (2008) with Franka Potente and Hanns Zischler. Despite difficult childhoods and adverse living conditions, they have not lost their will to live, they are fighters, advocates of traditions and role models!

background

According to the National Institute of Statistics, there were a total of 1,267,190 people over 60 years of age in Bolivia in 2022 (INE, 2022). For over 99% of seniors in the lowest income fifth, which includes shoe shiners, the state pension is not enough to live on, meaning that they have to work well into old age (CEPAL, 2022). The majority of them used to work in other informal professions but can no longer do this work and now shine shoes, even though nowhere in the world is this work as undervalued as in La Paz and the neighboring city of El Alto. Due to severe discrimination, many hide their faces behind a balaclava to avoid being recognized. Their working days are long, often more than eight hours. On good days, seniors shine an average of 15 pairs of shoes (equivalent to about 4 euros), on bad days just two or three. Over 17% of seniors have a physical impairment, and more than 43% suffer from chronic diseases (NGO's own data, 2022). Although health insurance has been in place since 2019, it does not cover many treatment costs and medications, which means that medical examinations are only carried out in absolute emergencies. Physical and mental health are also damaged by the growing loneliness in old age and the subjective feeling of experiencing less affection, and in conjunction with increasing poverty, this has a negative impact on the quality of life of seniors (Armitage, R. & Nellums, LB, 2020). Regular exchange with people in similar life situations is particularly important for them. This way, they are reintegrated into a social network and at the same time strengthened in their mental and physical abilities. Through memory training, preventive measures and regular medical examinations, illnesses can be recognized in good time and treated accordingly, and not only when it is actually already too late.

Day 17 Day 17
The good deed

With this good deed you support the implementation of weekly events with shoe shiners and their partners between the ages of 60 and 85. These meetings serve as an opportunity for exchange and encounters and at the same time promote the mental and physical health of the participants through exercise and memory training, which above all improves concentration and memory. Seminars on various topics, joint leisure activities as well as theater, music and dance workshops complement the varied program. The stories and life experiences of the seniors are incorporated into a picture memory game, passed on and valued. Your donation can also be used to carry out health check-ups and treat the seniors appropriately. Food packages also strengthen them through healthy nutrition. The good deed is therefore an important step in improving the quality of life of the seniors and enabling them to live and age in dignity.

95% of shoe shiners do not speak Spanish as their native language, but rather Aymara or Quechua. Since 2009, these two and 34 other languages have been recognized as official national languages alongside Spanish.
