When the young Afghan Nesrin is asked in the Kara Tepe refugee camp on Lesbos what her greatest wish is, she answers: "To ensure the survival of my child!" Many women and their children are in the same situation as Nesrin. There are around 2,000 minors in the Kara Tepe refugee camp, including many very young children (UNHCR, 2021). Refugee camps on the Aegean islands of Lesbos, Chios, Samos and Kos in particular lack adequate food and health care and adequate hygienic facilities. NGOs and community centers provide the little ones with powdered milk and clean water. But the situation in Athens is also becoming increasingly difficult. Several thousand people who previously lived in the camps on the Aegean islands are now on the streets, including many small children who urgently need care (rbb24, 2021).

79.5 million people were displaced worldwide in 2020 (UNHCR, 2020). About 50 percent of them are women and girls (UN Refugee Aid, 2021). They flee for a variety of reasons, often because they have experienced violence or are threatened with forced marriage or genital mutilation. It is not uncommon for them to become victims of attacks while fleeing. Most women arrive in the refugee camps traumatized (Heinrich Böll Foundation, 2018). There is great hardship in the Greek refugee camps. The refugees live in tents or under wooden shacks, the hygienic conditions are catastrophic and people are not provided with enough food. There are virtually no psychologists to deal with the mental suffering. Births take place in makeshift rooms, and the women receive little care before and after delivery. Under these circumstances, not all women are able to breastfeed their babies and thus provide them with sufficient nutrition (Simkin & Klaus, 2015). The babies are malnourished and urgently need milk powder as a substitute. But milk powder is expensive and is not included in the daily food package that the refugees receive. Greece is still weakened by the financial crisis in 2008, and the economy is recovering only slowly (Der Standard, 2019). Solidarity with the refugees certainly exists, but many Greeks continue to live on subsistence levels and can give little.

This does not solve the women's emotional distress, but at least they are relieved of the worry about feeding their babies for a longer period of time. The women and families can take care of obtaining other necessary foodstuffs. This makes their already difficult everyday life easier. The campaign against malnutrition also ensures a little more equal opportunities for the children affected, because deficiencies in early years can inhibit child development. This is another reason why early and sufficient supplies are essential.
