Day 7
The Freiburg Parents’ Home for families with children suffering from cancer

Two rocking horses, the smell of fresh waffles and comfortable armchairs: anyone who enters the parents' house in Freiburg is greeted by a warm, friendly atmosphere. The house is a refuge, a haven and a piece of family in an uncertain time. Around 2,200 children in Germany develop cancer every year (German Childhood Cancer Foundation, 2020). The diagnosis always comes as a shock to families. For the sick child, his parents and siblings, this means: everything changes from one moment to the next. The illness and the treatments demand a lot from the families. At the same time, the young patients need nothing more than to be close to their parents. A hospital stay is also a strain for relatives. Parents are woken up in the children's ward up to eight times a night - more often than the doctors on duty. That is why the parents' house is right next to the children's clinic. Here, families find everything they need for a long stay. In addition, the families receive comprehensive care from experienced specialists.

background

Medicine has made enormous progress in recent decades. Today, 80 percent of children with cancer survive their illness. However, the life-saving treatments are often intensive, lengthy and extremely exhausting for everyone involved. The chances of recovery for children with cancer depend not only on clinical care, but also to a large extent on the family situation. Against this background, numerous questions arise: What happens if mom or dad suddenly can no longer go to work? Where should the sibling stay during the day? What happens to the apartment, the house, the company? Who listens to the parents and advises them with all their fears and worries?

Families with a seriously ill child suddenly face financial, organizational and psychosocial questions. The diagnosis usually comes at a time in life when everything is still being rebuilt. Depending on the course of the disease, the situation can change at any time. The clinics cannot reconcile all family factors with the child's treatment. This is why numerous parent groups and initiatives have been founded across the country - including the support association for children with cancer in Freiburg. For 40 years, it has been committed to providing psychosocial care for families, relieving the burden on hospital staff through grants and financing research projects and medical equipment. Since 1995, the support association has run the parents' home next to the children's clinic.

Day 7 Day 7
The good deed

With today's donation you support the parents' home in Freiburg. The parents and siblings of children with cancer live in the parents' home for the duration of their inpatient treatment. A total of 37 rooms or apartments are available to the families. The bistro serves breakfast in the morning and sometimes waffles, cakes or a warm soup. In addition, the house offers everything the families need for a long stay, including communal kitchens, lounges and a laundry room. The siblings are looked after in the playroom of the parents' home by pedagogically and therapeutically trained staff. The social services advise and support the parents in all matters. All of these services strengthen and support affected families and improve the chances of recovery for the young patients.
