A small meal for a disadvantaged child in Germany

Small meal – big impact! Small meal – big impact!

A small meal for a disadvantaged child in Germany
Day 13
Child poverty in Germany

When Mateo and his sister Vanessa leave the apartment, you cannot immediately see how poor they are. They do not wear torn clothes, they have toys and they go to school regularly. Only on closer inspection does it become apparent that the two siblings do not have a balanced diet and are not in the best of health; they have fewer educational opportunities and suffer from social exclusion. 2.7 million children in Germany are in the same situation as Mateo and Vanessa (5th Federal Government Report on Poverty and Wealth, 2017). A strong environment can help them improve their living situation. Such an environment includes, for example, open child and youth work facilities that support children like Mateo and Vanessa as they grow up. Here they can take part in many free leisure and educational activities after school and receive healthy meals. Together with the teachers, they do their homework, receive support and strengthen their skills and everyday competences.

background

Child poverty is one of the greatest social challenges in Germany. According to official reports from the German federal government, 2.7 million children are currently growing up in poverty (5th Federal Government Poverty and Wealth Report, 2017). That is one in five children in Germany. A long-term study commissioned by the Bertelsmann Foundation shows that it is unlikely that they will be able to climb out of this poverty situation (Tophoven et al., 2017). For children affected by poverty, there are serious effects in all key areas of life. This includes basic needs such as food, clothing, health, housing, and the children's room. But children's social contacts and their behavior in interpersonal relationships are also influenced by the poverty situation (Chassé, 2010). The children affected lack important experiences that are a matter of course for many other children and adults. This includes, in particular, moments of lightheartedness in a daily life that is burdened with numerous worries and fears. Due to their poverty, these children experience social exclusion, which in the long term often makes them outsiders in our society.

Day 13 Day 13
The good deed

Your good deed enables children and young people affected by poverty in German cities to be provided with a small, healthy meal. With your support, they learn to cook something healthy and eat together after school in an open child and youth welfare facility. This meal helps them to be full and receptive to the facility's wide range of afternoon activities. These include sports and music projects and often homework help. The homework help helps the children to catch up on the week's lessons so that they can keep up at school. Since most families cannot afford tutoring, the open child and youth facilities are important contact points for the children.
