Day 13
Environmental protection and improvement of living conditions in Peru

Do you know where Paddington Bear is from? The country with the deep ravines? Where there is one of the most diverse cuisines, where guinea pigs also find their place? The answer is: Peru. Paddington Bear is based on the Peruvian spectacled bear, which lives in the Chanchamayo Valley. The Peruvian spectacled bear, or Andean bear, is the only bear that lives in South America. At the beginning of the year, Peru made headlines mainly because of severe floods, landslides and mudslides caused by the weather phenomenon "El Niño". According to scientists, such extreme weather phenomena will become more frequent as a result of climate change. Deforestation also increases the risk of floods and landslides.

Environmental protection and improvement of living conditions in Peru
need
Seedlings for reforestation and biodiversity conservation in the Chanchamayo Valley, Peru.
activity
The Peruvian partner NGO trains small farmers in environmentally friendly, agroforestry farming and reforests forests.
Measurable performance
Number of seedlings that can be purchased for reforestation.
Result
The small farming families actively contribute to environmental protection and improve their own living conditions through diversified agroforestry.
Systemically relevant impact
The living conditions for small farming families are improved. A long-term contribution to climate protection is made.
background

The landscape in the central Chanchamayo Valley has also changed dramatically due to deforestation. 80% of the rainforest in the region has already disappeared, along with many different plant and animal species.

The decline of the rainforest is largely due to slash-and-burn agriculture. Forest areas are periodically cleared to create new, nutrient-rich areas for cultivation, which are vital for feeding families. Slash-and-burn agriculture is often the only method known to small farmers to gain new agricultural land.

Day 13 Day 13
The good deed

Today's donation will give small farming families the opportunity to use environmentally friendly cultivation techniques that make deforestation unnecessary. They will be trained in agroforestry cultivation of coffee and other products. Their fields and cleared areas will be reforested with seedlings of native tree species. This promotes the region's biodiversity and mitigates the effects of climate change. Effective and diversified cultivation helps to increase family income and ensure a balanced diet.
