Ten-year-old Teerakarn Chaokoraj, known as Em for short, spent the first years of his life with his grandmother. After her death, his life took a dramatic turn. He had to live with his mother in a ruin in Pattaya, together with other homeless people. He was surrounded by criminals and drug addicts, and spent his nights begging and scavenging with his mother. Fortunately, social workers from the child protection program became aware of Em's poor condition in 2008 and, after much persuasion, were able to convince his mother to put him under the supervision of the staff. It was very difficult for Em at the beginning - he did not know a structured and sheltered life with rules. He is now an eager student, has friends, and wants to become a craftsman one day.

It is estimated that 20,000 - 25,000 children live homeless on the streets of Thailand. Of these, around 2,000 live in the tourist hotspot Pattaya in east central Thailand, which has a dubious reputation as a city of child prostitution. Many of these children are abducted from border countries such as Laos or Cambodia, or come from the desperately poor rural areas of northeast Thailand in the hope of a better life. In Pattaya and the surrounding area, street children are confronted with situations that no child should have to experience. We want to give these children a decent childhood and a promising future.

The good deed

Today's good deed will provide children in Pattaya with places to sleep. The aid organization needs support to buy the necessary materials (mattresses, pillows, duvets, mosquito nets and a cuddly toy), which have to be replaced regularly, especially in the emergency accommodation, and to bring the children into the child protection program. In order to stop child trafficking and abuse in and around Pattaya, the organization has developed a three-stage child protection program: 1. Outreach work - trained employees contact street children and inform them about dangers, human trafficking, drugs, crime and abuse. 2. Drop-In in the city center temporarily takes in affected children, provides them with a safe place to sleep, food, advice and help. 3. If a child decides to stop living on the streets, they can move into a permanent place in the child protection center outside the city. There the child is supported and grows up in a protected environment, receives medical care, school and training opportunities.
